Us Air Force Lab Seeks Ai Solutions for C2

The United States Air Force is at the forefront of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its command and control systems, ensuring that in the face of any adversary, decisions made in the critical domains of air, space, and cyberspace are informed, rapid, and effective. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Information Directorate, located in Rome, New York, has initiated a call for collaborations with industry experts for its ambitious Artificial Intelligence and Next Generation Distributed Command and Control project.

Encapsulating a total of eight distinctive technical areas, the project’s key aim is to refine AI application within the scope of command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) despite hostile environments. Shifting attention to software-defined command and control mechanisms, the project explores AI’s capabilities in optimizing distributed resources, essential for executing operations effectively across various theaters of conflict.

Tactical AI underscores the importance of distributed sensors and the insights they gather. Here, decision-making is enhanced by AI’s ability to detect and mitigate interference, which is vital for maintaining a coherent command and control structure under adversarial conditions.

This extensive AI integration effort by the AFRL is projected to involve an investment of approximately $99 million over the next four years.
