Revolutionary AI Pin By Humane Aims To Replace Smartphones

04 July, 2024

In the latest AI news, Humane, an artificial intelligence startup known for its innovative AI tools, is taking a bold step towards revolutionizing the way we interact with technology. The five-year-old company, co-founded by former Apple designers Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, has unveiled its debut product – a $699 AI Pin that is poised to replace smartphones.

The Humane AI Pin, which can be worn on your lapel, is designed to facilitate tasks traditionally performed on smartphones. Users can make calls, send texts, and access information using voice commands. Remarkably, the device also features a laser display that transforms your palm into a compact screen, displaying the time, date or nearby points of interest.

Unlike other voice-activated devices, the Humane AI Pin doesn’t continuously listen or record. “It remains inactive until you interact with it through your voice, touch, gesture or the laser ink display,” Chaudhri explained during a 10-minute launch video available on the company’s website.

However, the device comes with an added cost beyond its initial price tag. Customers are required to subscribe to a $24 monthly data plan with T-Mobile. The device’s unique phone number ensures it operates independently, eliminating the need for tethering to a smartphone.

Humane made headlines earlier this year when it secured a $100 million funding round from Microsoft, LG’s venture arm, and Tiger Global before unveiling any product. The company has since raised over $200 million in total, with notable contributions from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.

Humane is set to start accepting orders for the revolutionary AI Pin on November 16th. In a launch video, Chaudhri and Bongiorno showcased some of the device’s impressive features and discussed the underlying technology powered by a Qualcomm chipset.

The AI Pin is equipped with a built-in speaker and camera, with a light indicating when these functions are activated. The device also supports an AI images generator feature; a double-tap on the pin captures a photo or video, which can be viewed on Humane’s web app.

The device’s capabilities extend beyond sending and receiving texts. It can translate spoken conversations from Spanish to English and vice versa in real-time. Users can also access AI services from the internet, rather than relying on downloaded apps.

Humane has secured partnerships with Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, and other companies for contributing AI services. Users can request information or play music, with responses provided by large language models. However, music access requires a Tidal subscription.

The AI Pin also functions as a personal assistant, summarizing the user’s daily calendar, messages received, and health data like protein intake.

The Humane AI Pin is a significant step in the evolution of AI tools, combining the convenience of a wearable device with the functionality of a smartphone. While it remains to be seen how the market will receive this innovative product, it certainly sets a new benchmark in the integration of artificial intelligence into our daily lives.
