Large language models such as ChatGPT are at the frontier of this technological evolution. Notwithstanding their potential, experts including Shannon Gallagher, a Carnegie Mellon researcher, caution that LLMs still require refinement before they can be entrusted with high-stake decisions. The “balloon test” performed by Gallagher’s team demonstrates the variability in LLM responses when analyzing complex geopolitical events like the high-altitude Chinese surveillance balloon incident.
