Meta To Label AI-Manipulated Political Ads From January 1

In a significant move to enhance transparency and accountability, Meta, the parent organization of Facebook and Instagram, has unveiled a new policy aimed at labeling political and social-issue advertisements that have been digitally manipulated or created, including those using artificial intelligence (AI). This policy, which will be implemented globally from January 1, is designed to provide users of Facebook and Instagram with a clearer understanding of when a political, election, or social issue advertisement has been digitally manipulated or created, including through AI.
Under this new policy, advertisers will be required to disclose to Meta if an ad contains a realistic image, video, or audio that has been digitally created or modified. Once this information is disclosed, Meta will tag the ad accordingly. This move comes at a time when generative AI, including AI images generator and AI video generator tools, have become increasingly accessible on the internet. These tools enable users to create convincing photos, videos, or audios of individuals saying and doing things they never actually did.
A case in point is the video ad released by the Republican National Committee shortly after President Joe Biden announced his reelection bid in April. The ad used realistic, artificial intelligence generated images to portray a dystopian image of the U.S if Biden were to serve another term. It depicted scenarios such as China invading Taiwan, banks shutting down, migrants flooding bridges and armed officers guarding San Francisco following a crime surge. Interestingly, the 30-second ad included a voluntary disclaimer indicating that the images were generated by artificial intelligence.
According to Meta’s new policy, if an advertiser fails to disclose that an ad was digitally created or altered, the social media giant will reject the ad. Furthermore, repeated violations could lead to unspecified penalties against the advertiser. However, it’s important to note that this policy does not mandate advertisers to disclose digitally created or altered content that is irrelevant to the claims made in the ads. For instance, adjustments related to image size, crops, or color correction do not need to be disclosed.
