Artificial Intelligence: A Game-Changer in Global Economy & Education

19 June, 2024

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the economic landscape across the globe, bridging gaps and creating new avenues on a grand scale. A powerful disruptor, AI has its digital fingers poised to press the fast-forward button on global growth, with recent projections from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) suggesting that “AI could contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030.” This staggering figure surpasses the combined output of powerhouses China and India, representing a 14 percent hike in worldwide GDP, largely attributable to AI advancements.

The revolutionary capabilities of AI are not confined to the realms of commerce alone; the education sector stands on the cusp of a transformative epoch. Educators are embracing AI’s efficiency in data analytics, opening doorways from traditional teaching methods to a realm where technology creates a personalized learning experience. Reportedly, AI in the education market soared to a value of $4 billion in 2022 and has a projected growth spurt exceeding 10 percent from now through 2032. The pull towards bespoke education pathways has educators and administrators increasingly integrating comprehensive data analysis tools to enhance the learning experience.

The impact of AI within the fabric of African education was a topic of rich discourse in the EdTech world. During the April 2024 Mastercard Foundation’s EdTech Mondays, experts explored AI’s potential within this sphere. As explained by Mutembei Kariuki, the founder of Fastagger, “AI is transporting the role of teachers from exam markers to that of mentors,” striking a chord with the elevated role educators play in the AI-empowered classroom.

While AI stirs excitement among tech aficionados, its full impact in developing regions has yet to unfold fully. Yet, the potential for AI in education is undeniable: from bespoke learning experiences to challenges calling for a mindset shift amongst educational policymakers. The distractive nature of AI contrasts with the trepidation surrounding its potential to upend the century-old educational system. “AI is coming, and it’s very disruptive. Education is facing a monumental shift, and we must maximize the benefits while minimizing the risks,” said Matthew Grollnek of the Mastercard Foundation.

Despite these advances, a lack of a clear policy framework hinders AI’s full potential in various geographies, such as Africa. The African Union is stepping up, however, with its Continental Strategy on AI, which prioritizes education and the preservation of African languages. This approach promises to close the gap between technological innovation and policy development.

The African Union Digital Education Strategy and Implementation Plan for 2023-2028 outlines how AI could enrich educational practices including research, teaching, and administration. The plan stresses the bolstering of digital literacy and ensuring that member states have the necessary infrastructure to support digital education.

In a leapfrogging effort, Rwanda emerges as a trailblazer, being the first African nation to adopt an AI policy. This is a roadmap to embracing AI’s benefits while safeguarding sensitive data such as children’s information. Christine Niyizamwiyitira, a Scholar in Residence at Carnegie Mellon University, touts AI’s readiness for subjects like coding and mathematic equations. This technological integration promises to lessen educators’ burdens while fostering inclusivity and equity among learners, particularly those with special needs.

As the continent looks to the future, the Mastercard Foundation’s Young Africa Works strategy forecasts a workforce of a billion by 2030, with 375 million young adults entering the job market. To prepare them, educational strategies must evolve, and AI could be the catalyst, equipping them with crucial skills for the modern economy.

In conclusion, the latest AI news & AI tools forecast monumental shifts in both the global economy and the education sector. As the world embraces AI text generators, AI images generator, and AI video generators, we stand witnesses to a revolution that will redefine not just how we do business, but also how we learn, teach, and prepare for the future that unfolds before us. The onus now lies in navigating the integration of AI thoughtfully and responsibly, ensuring that its promise delivers benefits across all sectors and societies.
